Spirituality Day

We took part in a whole school Spirituality and Prayer Day today!

We started the day all together in the hall and Mr Thomas led our worship. We sang ‘God behind, God beside, God ahead’ and talked about what this means.

We then had a visitor in class who shared the story ‘Tales’ and we learnt about a lost meerkat. We had to find baby meerkats around the classroom before discussing feelings and finishing with a song.

We enjoyed looking back (God behind) at photographs from our learning in Reception throughout the year. We discussed our ‘Special Moments’ and how we felt. We drew and wrote these on our own footprints which are now displayed in the school hall.

We wrote our own prayeroplanes! We could pray for anything (God beside) and these are some of our ideas:

I pray that I can always help people – Isaac

I pray that everyone is happy and joyful – Scarlett

I pray that I get better at gymnastics – Alyssa

I pray that I can play in Year 1 – Harley

We folded our prayers into paper aeroplanes to throw them in an end of the day sharing assembly.

We gathered around the Forest School fire with Mr Cross to talk about our future (God ahead) and talked about what we might like to be when we grow up.

‘I would like to be a ballerina and if I get any spare time I’d like to be an author’ – Charlotte

We had a very thoughtful day.

We really enjoyed spending the afternoon in our new classroom and meeting one of our new teachers, Mrs O’Donnell. We are looking forward to all of our learning in Year 1!

We even got to take home a little bag in which we can put in 3 special items to share with our class and teachers in September.

Our cross age phase Science day is well under way with fun investigations taking place in every classroom.

In Acorn classroom the children are busy making ‘Racing Rockets’ with Thomas (Yr5) at the top of the leader board with a distance of 3m 60cm, followed by Kyden (Yr2) at 3m 40cm. We are ignoring Mr Cross with a distance of 6m 40cm!

Congratulations to all the children who took part in this afternoon’s Key Stage 1 Sport’s Day. It was a wonderful afternoon with Green Conder taking the lead. We wonder who will win overall when Key Stage 2 hold their Sport’s Day tomorrow?

Forest School Update

Much of our Forest School time this week was spent in preparing chocolate cake. You thought you couldn’t cook cake on a fire? Well think again!

Some children made up the cake mix, while others picked the largest Hazel leaves they could find. We wrapped a spoonful of cake mix in the Hazel leaves to make mini chocolate cake parcels, then baked them over the hot embers. The great thing was that we could eat the leaves as well as the cake! The left-over mixture went in our Dutch oven (a very heavy cast-iron pan on legs, with a flat lid). It sat in the embers with burning sticks placed on top of the lid so that the heat circulated all around the cake. And… ta da! Real chocolate cake! We were very proud of the children who dared to try the leafy-cakey parcels. Some came back for 2nds and even 3rds.

Other children had a great time making huge, muddy puddles in the mud kitchen and inviting us to and serving us in their Mud Cafe. As usual, there was plenty of  tree-climbing, the branches of which magically became horses. Some children wanted to try to make paint from natural ingredients. They tried using grass, mud, charcoal, flower heads and mixing with water with oil and with soap suds. Other children learned how to use a mallet and a Billhook to split wood for the fire. And there were plenty of self-directed games on the mud slide and the big field. Some children even remembered to go and check on the tree we planted 2 weeks ago!

We have already introduced ourselves to the class, eaten our bread which we baked yesterday, listened to some Medieval music, watched a Jester (Mr Cross!) and learnt some Medieval dancing.
